Daddy Issues - Father's Day - 06/20/2010

June 20, 2010 by Dave Johnson

I’ve got daddy issues with God and I’m guessing I’m not alone.

In Galatians 4:6 Paul wrote – God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out – “Abba, Father.”

As Christians, our spirit becomes like the Spirit of God and we can say to God – Abba.

The word “Abba” is the Aramaic word for “Father.” It is used by small children in addressing their fathers and is similar to our English word “Daddy.” What Paul is saying here is that because of what Jesus did for us, we are able to refer to the God of the universe as daddy. Not only are we able, but it is something God prefers.

As fathers we are called by God to be the primary spiritual leader in our homes and that doesn’t mean we just teach stuff, it means that we model it. And I can’t think of a better way that as parents we can begin to fill the spiritual hole in our kids than to do what I’m suggesting this morning.

My prayer this morning is we could all examine our relationship with our Heavenly Father and resolve any daddy issues that we might have. I have daddy issues, and I’m guessing I’m not alone.
