A couple of months ago I preached a series of messages called Filling the Hole in which I tried to help us realize how we need to help meet the physical needs of the poor. I used Richard Stearns book, The Hole in Our Gospel as a reference to help us see the current needs that are all around us and we also heard stories from our own members about what they were already doing to help meet the physical needs.

I began the year by suggesting we needed to be a both/and church and not an either/or church – meaning we do our best to address both the physical and the spiritual needs of people and not choose one over the other. I really do think while we still have a ways to go, we are making progress when it comes to meeting the physical needs or social side of the equation. Now I want to move to the other side of the both/and equation and look closely at the spiritual holes that exist in so many people’s lives.
